BJ Upton

About B.J. Upton

B.J. Upton is a professional baseball player who made his MLB debut in 2004 playing for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Born in 1984, Melvin Emmanuel Upton acquired the nickname “B.J,” which is short for “Bossman Junior,” because his father used to go by the name of “Bossman.” Upton started making a name for himself during college. He helped the 2002 Team USA Junior National Team win a Silver Medal, with his amazing 9-game batting average of .462. The next year, Upton was named a First-Team All-American after having batted an even more impressive .641 and having recorded 11 home runs during his senior year of high school. In 2002, following his earlier years of amazing success, B.J. Upton was drafted by the Devil Rays, where he played in the minor league until 2004. When he made his MLB debut, Upton made baseball history. Not only was he the youngest Ray ever, but he was also the youngest player in the MLB in 2004. B.J. was drafted as the second overall pick. In 2005, his brother Justin was the first pick. That combination  made the Upton brothers the highest-drafted siblings in MLB history. B.J. Upton’s MLB career with the Rays has been impressive, to say the least. In 2007, he had 24 home runs. He was one of only 6 batters in the American League to record at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. In 2008, he helped the Rays become American League champions for the first time ever with his .273 average and 44 stolen bases. In 2009, Upton became the first player in Tampa Bay Rays history to hit for the cycle, meaning that he hit a single, a double, a triple, and a home run all in a single game. One of the most promising young players in the MLB, B.J. Upton will likely become as one of the best Rays players ever.
